Ellis Noval was an unheralded hero of the Civil War era. The little we know of Ellis is learned by word of mouth accounts and seldom verifiable; however, he is attributed with having considerable skill, talent and imagination. And so the story goes...

Ellis Noval, it seems, was a gunsmith who was called into service during the Civil War and was assigned to provide services to Robert E. Lee and the troops reporting directly to him. Ellis was also a talented musician and noting the significant downtime in waiting between battles and the effect it was having on morale, Ellis used his skill and imagination to render his contribution to the cause.

He took his black powder long rifle, hollowed the stock, attached a bridge, mounted some strings (we don't know how many) and fashioned a slide guitar. And out of concern for the morale of his fellow soldiers and friends, he played songs that took them back to more pleasant places in their memories.

That's how we understand it happened and it is in keeping with this spirit that the band 'Ellis Noval' has committed to use it's talents, skill and imagination to raise the morale of new friends by playing familiar tunes that take them to pleasant places in the heart ...
